PHOENIX -- On the day he reported to the spring training, Manny Ramirez predicted this would be his last season with the Dodgers.
âI know Iâm not going to be here next year,â Ramirez said.
So you donât think you will re-sign with Dodgers?
âI doubt it, I donât know,â he said. âIâm happy to be here. Iâm going to try to enjoy myself.â
Asked what made him think he wouldnât be in Los Angeles in 2011, Ramirez replied, âI donât know. I just know that Iâm not going to be here.â
Did he see himself moving to the American League?
âI donât know,â Ramirez said. âWeâll see. Letâs take it a day at a time.â
Ramirez said he wasnât even certain if he wanted to play next season.
âI donât know about tomorrow, but I know about today, soâŚ.â he said. âWhen the season is over, I want to see where Iâm at. If I play, I play. If they let me play, I play.â
Ramirez said the game was still fun to play.
âAll the time,â he said.
Of his struggles last season, Ramirez said, âFor me, it was great. I was telling myself, âThank you, God.â At least I was playing. Thatâs how I look at things. We didnât make the World Series, but at least we were there.
âI think I did a great job. It was good what I did, coming backâ from a 50-game drug suspension. âWhat happened last year, thatâs in the past. This yearâs a new year, so weâll see.â
Ramirez refused to talk in detail about problems at the plate last season, but he acknowledged that they made him change his off-season training regimen.
âMy whole career, I never hit,â he said. âBut after this year, I felt I needed to figure out a couple of [things]. Thatâs what I did.â
Did he figure out the cause of his problems?
âWeâre going to see in September,â he said. âIf Iâm still here.â
Ramirez said he weighs 235 pounds.
