Angela Bassett (who plays Notorious B.I.G.’s mother in ‘Notorious,’ which opens this weekend) likes to eat responsibly. It’s not like any of us would’ve known that to look at her. It’s not like she has an abnormally perfect body with incredible biceps and zero fat.
‘I try to eat healthy, but I won’t get on other people’s nerves about it. If you want to eat bacon, I’m OK with that. I love vegan choices, raw food choices, and I’ll eat whatever I have to in order to get into whatever shape I need to get into for any one particular role,’ says the actress in an interview with Charlie Amter in today’s Calendar section.
So where does she go when dining out is on the agenda? Grace, Real Food Daily, the California School of Culinary Arts in Pasadena (where the food is made by students), La Provence and, for dessert, Milk. Considering that the Times Test Kitchen’s Culinary S.O.S. about how to make Milk’s ‘ooey-gooey double-chocolate cookies’ has topped the Times website’s most-emailed list for two days now, that’s a choice most of the city can get behind.
What’s Bassett’s philosophy on food? ‘You want art in your food. I’m looking for complexity and taste. Not just ‘my body needs to eat,’ ‘ she says.
That’s something we all can get behind.
