Dick Van Dyke to star in ‘The Sunshine Boys’ with brother Jerry

In December, Dick Van Dyke canceled his appearances in his musical memoir ‘Step in Time’ at the Geffen Playhouse after he suffered an injury to his Achilles tendon. The 85-year-old actor has apparently recovered sufficiently because he is set to appear in a stage production of Neil Simon’s ‘The Sunshine Boys,’ alongside his brother, Jerry Van Dyke, at the Malibu Stage Company.
The benefit production will be a fundraiser for the theater and will run for five performances from April 13 to 17.
The Van Dyke brothers will play Al Lewis and Willy Clark, former vaudeville partners who have come to despise each other in their old age. Simon’s comedy debuted on Broadway in 1972 and received Tony nominations for best play and costar Jack Albertson. The 1975 movie version of the play won an Oscar for George Burns.
The Malibu Stage Co. is a 99-seat house located in the Point Dume area of Malibu.
The production represents a rare opportunity to see the Van Dyke brothers working together. Dick Van Dyke, whose roles famously include the movie ‘Mary Poppins,’ starred in the CBS series ‘Diagnosis Murder’ for eight seasons from 1993 to 2001. He also had his own series, ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show,’ that ran from 1961 to 1966. Jerry Van Dyke made guest appearances on both of his brother’s TV shows and had a supporting role in the sitcom ‘Coach’ on ABC.
Dick Van Dyke has also written a memoir, ‘My Lucky Life in and Out of Show Business,’ due for publication in early May.
