The Los Angeles Master Chorale said Tuesday that Grant Gershon has extended his contract as music director through the 2014-15 season. Gershon assumed the role of music director in 2001; his current contract was set to expire at the end of the 2010-11 season.

To date, Gershon has led more than 75 performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall. During his tenure as music director, he has championed new music and conducted works by Nico Muhly, Louis Andriessen, Meredith Monk, Christopher Rouse, Steve Reich and others. He has also broadened the reach of the L.A. Master Chorale by putting out recordings as part of a partnership with Decca Music Group.

The L.A. Master Chorale will be celebrating its 50th anniversary during the 2013-14 season.

Gershon said in an interview Tuesday that his new contract ‘gives us the ability to plan ahead with confidence.’

He added that the L.A. Master Chorale is hoping to have at least one significant commission per season and that it plans to produce a new CD every other year. Gershon also serves as associate conductor and chorus master for L.A. Opera, where he recently conducted the world premiere production of ‘Il Postino’ by Daniel Catán. The opera company said that Gershon will be conducting the production of ‘L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato,’ a collaboration with the Mark Morris Dance Group and Dance at the Music Center, which is scheduled to run May 5 to 8 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
