Crystal Cathedral in Orange County filing for bankruptcy

The owners of the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove said Monday that they are filing for bankruptcy, citing a rapid decline in revenue due to the recession. The megachurch has dealt with grave financial difficulties during the past year, announcing layoffs and canceling its popular ‘Glory of Easter’ pageant.

An architectural icon, the Crystal Cathedral was designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee, and opened in 1980. The glass-enclosed building seats 2,736 people and can accommodate more than 1,000 singers and instrumentalists, according to the church.

The Crystal Cathedral is famous around the world for its televised ‘Hour of Power’ program, which is produced weekly. The church said Monday that services and programs, including the ‘Hour of Power,’ will continue.
