SAG Awards: Ernest Borgnine honored with lifetime achievement award

Veteran actor Ernest Borgnine — 94 — received the Screen Actors Guild Award for lifetime achievement for his career that spanned six decades.
Borgnine, last seen in the hit ‘Red,’ won an Academy Award for lead actor for 1955’s ‘Marty’ and has appeared in such classic films as ‘From Here to Eternity’ and ‘The Wild Bunch.’ Tim Conway, who starred with Borgnine in the 1960s comedy series ‘McHale’s Navy’ and works with Borgnine supplying voices on ‘SpongeBob SquarePants,’ introduced the screen tribute.
Morgan Freeman, Borgnine’s costar in ‘Red,’ presented the award. A tearful Borgnine was greeted by a rousing standing ovation as he walked to the stage.
‘There are millions of those in the world who would love to be in our shoes, we are a privileged few who have been chosen to work in this field of entertainment.... I hope we will never let our dedication to our craft fail,’ he said. ‘Thank you so very much.’
The SAG awards — which dole out honors in both TV and film — are being held at the Shrine Exhibition Hall and telecast live simultaneously on TNT and TBS.
