Holiday dressing: Angelina Jolie shines in L’Agence

I have long been an admirer of Angelina Jolie’s confident, low-key style. And this look, which she wore Monday to a film premiere in Paris, is the perfect example.
Far from your typical red-carpet fare, her outfit is elegant yet relaxed. I love the slouchy black velveteen blazer and velvet ‘sweatpants’ with zippers at the ankles. As a kind of Southern Californian spin on le smoking, it would also be a perfect holiday outfit.
The entire look -- beaded top, too -- is from Los Angeles-based label L’Agence. I remember when L’Agence was just an apple in Margaret Maldonado’s eye. Maldonado founded her namesake talent agency in 1994, representing makeup artists and hair and wardrobe stylists long before they were celebrities themselves.
Along the way, she’s represented the best of the best, including Rachel Zoe, Jay Manuel, Jennifer Rade, Cristina Ehrlich and Estee Stanley, and helped them create their own brands.
L’Agence was launched in 2008. Initially, it was to be a clothing line guest-designed by a different stylist each season. But Maldonado’s own aesthetic won out, and now she is the head designer.
In two short years, L’Agence has become a go-to for such L.A. style staples as baby-soft T-shirts, leather leggings and sweater coats (most pieces cost less than $1,000). But that’s not all. Maldonado’s twist ensures there is something for everyone. A silver beaded bib elevates a white tuxedo blouse to rock ‘n’ roll status, for example, while a motorcycle jacket done in charcoal wool is somewhere between preppy and punk, and a lace print dress with a ruched turtleneck and grosgrain ribbon belt is surprisingly sweet.
L’Agence is carried in 250 stores worldwide, including Barneys New York and Ron Herman in L.A. Angelina’s velveteen blazer ($562), zip-bottom pants ($298) and beaded top ($480) are available at Ron Herman.
